The Amajuba District Municipality’s Council on the 8th March 2019 elected a Speaker following the resignation of Mr Afzul Rehman.
History was made with the Amajuba District Municipality’s Council electing a female Speaker on the International Women’s Day, a day celebrated in many countries around the world. It is a day when women are recognised for their achievements and for their role in the society.
Cllr Phumzile Mgcina has been elected to take this strategic position regarded as the engine of any Council. She was declared by the IEC as the Amajuba District Municipality’s Council representing the ANC to replace the Councillor who recently resigned to take another career opportunity.
Phumzile Mgcina a very young and visionary leader is from Utrecht where she finished her Grade 12 with Emalahleni High School. In a quest to enhance herself she furthered her education with Majuba TVET College. She is not new in leadership and in community service having joined the ANCYL at the age of 16 then joined the ANC. She has served as a member of the Regional Executive Committee of the ANCYL. Because of her efforts and contribution she was recently elected as a Deputy Regional Secretary of the ANC in the Emalahleni Region. She also has experience in local government having worked with Emadlangeni Local Municipality for a period exceeding 4 years.
She was elected unopposed.
She resumes her duties as a Speaker immediately and will soon embark on the IDP Roadshows where she will be tabling a report on progress that has been made by the municipality, plans and budget related matters.
