Today marks exactly 29 days before the closing of 2018 funding applications for learners who wish to pursue their studies at the country’s 26 public universities and 50 Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges. The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) opened applications for the 2018 academic year on 01 August 2017, and will close on midnight, 30 November 2017.

To this date, we have received more than 130 000 applications from school learners; tertiary students who are not currently funded by NSFAS; and out of school youths. “Although we have reached this number of applications, we are still not satisfied as our target of applications is 200 000. We want to urge all Grade 12 learners and out of school youths who have not yet applied, to do so as soon as possible,’’ said NSFAS Spokesperson, Kagisho Mamabolo. By this time last year, NSFAS had received 20 000 fewer applications, which led to NSFAS re-opening the application phase in January 2017. “There will not be any extended application period for the 2018 application campaign, and we wish to emphasise this message to all needy young people who have not yet applied,” said Mamabolo.

Applicants can apply online (www.nsfas.org.za) by creating an account on https://my.nsfas.org.za and then filling in the online application form and attaching required documents. Alternatively, applicants can apply at NYDA walk-in centres countrywide.
