On 8 January 2016, the victim who was 26 years old, was asleep in her house at Section 7, Madadeni. she was awakened when someone forced her door opened. She was accosted by three males armed with knives. They tied her up with shoe laces and electric cable. She was repeatedly raped by the three suspects who used condoms. The victim then recognised one attacker and asked him why he was doing. However it would be a serious mistake for her to mention his name. the suspects then decided that they must kill her because she knew the one suspect. they slit her throat and stabbed her once in the chest. She victim passed out due to the excessive bleeding. The suspects ransacked the house and took her cell phone, tablet and cash. They left the victim for dead. The victim miraculously regained consciousness and fell of the bed and crawled to the neighbour’s house. they summoned the police and the ambulance. She was in a critical condition but just managed to mention the name of the suspect who the police subsequently established to be a neighbour as well. The case was handed to Newcastle FCS and the members went on a 3 day manhunt for the suspects. They were arrested after three days in a bus at Vryheid towards Nongoma. The cell phone, tablet, knives, used condoms and face cloth were recovered. The suspects were charged and kept in custody. The suspect were Sifiso Ndlovu (21), Thembinkosi Nhlapo (22) and Zamokuhle Buthelezi (20). Nhlapo and Buthelzi pleaded guilty to all counts and were sentenced to life for rape, 15 years for armed robbery, 7 years for attempted murder and 2 years for housebreaking. Sifiso Ndlovu maintained his innocence but was convicted and sentenced on all counts and received the same sentence as his co accused. A still very traumatised victim expressed her gratitude to the members from the Newcastle FCS Unit and endeavours to fight for the rights of rape victims.
