Newcastle Regional Court convicted and sentenced Dumisani Petros Mkhwanazi (42) to 15 years imprisonment for murder and was declared unfit to possess a firearm. On 19 October 2016 at 06:40, a truck and a vehicle collided along Faraday Street in Newcastle, both drivers alighted from their vehicles and an argument ensued. A 32-year-old pedestrian who witnessed an accident tried to mediate and calm the situation. When he informed the vehicle driver that he caused the accident, the driver suddenly withdrew a firearm and fatally shot at the pedestrian. The deceased was later identified as Sithole Sithole. A case of murder was opened at Newcastle police station and the accused was immediately arrested.

“People who possess licensed firearms and had implied that they are for protection but tend to use them to fulfil their criminal urges and temperamental issues; they do not deserve to be given licenses to possess firearms. An innocent life was lost unnecessarily. The accused received a successful prosecution for his actions and that is highly commendable. The investigator’s thorough investigation which led to the successful prosecution of the accused is applauded,” said the KwaZulu-Natal Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Bheki Langa.
