Amajuba District Municipality together with the three local municipalities participated in the 2019 Department of Sports and Recreation SALGA Games that were hosted in the eThekwini Municipality from Thursday 12 December 2019 to Sunday 15 December 2019.
The event began with a parade led by the eThekwini Metro Mayor, Cllr Mxolisi Kaunda, Amajuba District Mayor, Dr Ngubane and various dignitaries, from the Durban city hall to the newly launched promenade in the Durban beachfront.
In a send-off which was held at Amajuba TVET college on Thursday, Dr Musa Ngubane congratulated all the participants that were going to take part in the various sporting codes and wished them a safe journey and success in the games that they will play. He emphasised the importance of good behaviour and self-discipline as the participants will be expected to uphold the good reputation of the district. He encouraged the team to obtain as many gold medals as possible and to surpass last year’s number 2 position. He further congratulated all the participants on making it thus far and noted that sports is an important factor in promoting a healthy lifestyle, social cohesion and fighting the scourge of drug abuse and teenage pregnancy.
In the opening ceremony eThekwini Municipality Mayor Cllr Mxolisi Kaunda welcomed all the municipalities to the warmest city of eThekwini and expressed his sincere gratitude for the opportunity given to the city to host the 2019 SALGA games. He assured participants that they have strengthened security and safety in the city so as to ensure that everyone will be protected and safe during their 4 days stay in the city. He announced that city security personnel have been deployed to all strategic points as an extra security measure. Amajuba district participated in 16 sport codes and was able to take number 1 position in the overall score in Female Basket Ball and Females Table Tennis, 3rd position in Athletics ,2nd position in Golf, 3rd Ruby Males , 3rd Male and Females Volley ball. In the overall score for these games Amajuba District Municipality obtained 6th position, even though these results are not impressive we would like to take this opportunity to congratulate the team for their effort, we hope they will be inspired to do better next year.
Amajuba District will host the DSR SALGA games in 2020, this was announced by MEC of Sports and Recreation Hlengiwe Mavimbela at the closing ceremony of the 2019 SALGA Games which were hosted by eThekwini Municipality. The honourable MEC expressed extreme joy and excitement as she made the announcement. She stated that Amajuba are suitable hosts considering the rapid improvement and development of the sporting activities in the District. As Amajuba District, we are excited about announcement of being the hosts of one of the biggest sporting tournaments in the province, this event will also contribute to the economic development of the town as there will be various business opportunities made available during the course of the tournament.
